In "Spirit of Nature" , soft, moody and atmospheric landscapes take us to the forests of Kangaroo Valley in NSW and in the South Island of New Zealand.
Sophie finds her starting point in the beautiful sceneries she comes across, but she is never interested in replicating reality. " It is a mood that I want to convey, far more than the faithful image of an existing place" she explains.
The places that Sophie finds moving and inspiring prompt her to paint what she calls "abstract sensations", that is why the landscape is only suggested through shapes and colours, without defining very much, and only enough information is given to visualise the desired surroundings, the rest is left to the imagination . "Peaceful, romantic, reflective, dreamy, or even haunting"...are all adjectives often used to describe Sophie's abstract landscapes.
This new series was painted over 2 years, on Italian linen, using the technique of numerous sheer layers of Dutch oil paint, to create depth and transparency
